  • LANDMARK OF THE HEART

As a child a buildings features,
    Were what imprinted my mind,
    Signage amongst the creatures,
Gave my my mind a wind.

    Down by the station,
    Where trains came to town,
    Was the minor nation,
    In our town.

    Beatrice Creamery,  Meadow  Gold Butter,
In a block long building and a block wide,
Was the stuff that was the utter,
    Happiness of this boys hide.

    The architectural design,
    Was so fancy,
More than other buildings, ’twas fine,
Made my tummy go all dancy.

I think they are all lofts now, in there,
    Times change as companies do,
Down by the station is called LoDo, where,
The elite meet to eat and go,
    For a drink there..

  • This “so” reminds me of my childhood memories of old buildings and places in Seattle. There’s an Italian restraunt not far from where I grew up, where I walk inside and I’m transported back to 1972. The candy isle where they sold penny-candy (unheard of now days…lol) and the “exact” location of my favorite tootsie rolls…is underneath a booth I always choose when I dine there. In my mind I can see the store, but in reality, it’s a new place of business. What are some of the transformations that you’ve seen that amaze you?

  • I’m very much like you are about building features, Doug. They evoke memories and can provide such inspiration at times! I love your sensitive poem.

  • oh those grand old industrial buildings – when I came to New York I think I was as fascinated by the old American Bank Note Printing Company in The Bronx (the cheque people) as I was by the skyscrapers.

  • Funny – I grew up in Chicago, then moved away for 28 years. When I came back, there was something oddly comforting about those old buildings.

  • Good times had in the past, I’m sure.

  • This recalls my youth too , Doug and this kind of buildings were those built in the years 30 .
I always have been impressed too by the steam train . They fascinated me like the high and fancy buildings .
You say all of that very well in verses .

    I agree : rendez – vous for a phone call in 2011
    In friendship

  • I remember creamery . Dad worked at ours.  Sometimes we had treats when he came home.  Mostly though just our days milk, and maybe some cottage cheese.  The old buildings are  the best.   Have a happy week.
